Self-examination is key to our continued growth. If you are stuck in a rut or laser focused on the next steps in your journey, self-examination will aid you in your station in life. Socrates said that the unexamined life is not worth living, and as I get older, the more relevant this appears to be.

To begin our journey of self-improvement, we must first know what our unique skills are. We can learn these skills by looking inward. Unique skills are those we excell at and are ones we should develop. Famous people in sports, entertainment, business and science have skills that make them stand out. Imagine trying to make LeBron James a cook or insisting that Einstein become a basketball player above all else. Our unique skills don't define us, rather their proper and applied usage can propel us forward in life. Ask yourself what you excell at naturally and what you do well with when you focus. Perfect practice makes perfect. We need to know our skills and hone them to move forward in life.

Ask yourself, what do I envison myself doing in five years? Look at your previous work environements, friendship circles and education. Often times birds of a feather flock together, and our friend groups can help us see where we will excel in the future. If your friends are all construction workers and managers we likely will excel in that field with perfect practice. Use your network to identify your skills. Often times a skill that will push us forward in life comes as a subspecialty of a larger discipline. In the construction example, look at your work and see if you are a plumber, electrian or framer. Then make a choice on your next move.

Look at the root-causes of your motivations and experiences. We arrive at a destination in life for a reason. Ask yourself why you are at your current station in life and what you can do to advance to the next step. Often times, the key to personal growth is finding out why we move through life to the stations we do and what we actually want to accomplish. Earl Nightingale famously said that a man is the sum of what he thinks and that thoughts drive a man to success. If you want to advance, you first need to find out what has kept you at the step you are at. Are you stagnating or simply passing through a key step in self development?

If you get stuck self-reflecting, ask a friend or close advisor what makes you unique. Guidance can help. Whatever your skill or circumstances, self-examination is key to your personal growth.
