Bluetooth technology has been with us on a consumer scale since 1999. The Ericsson T39 was the first cellular phone with Bluetooth, and hit the shelves in 2001. Bluetooth utilizes low-power and short range transmission technology in the 2.4-2.48 GHz and has been around connecting devices for 21-years. Many of Bluetooth’s users have never known a time without the technology, but old guys like me remember when we first saw it in action as Bluetooth headsets on early 2000’s cellphone headsets.
It is amazing that in 2022, there will be 5-billion Bluetooth enabled devices delivered to consumers worldwide. Bluetooth is at the center of connected technology, and it something so ubiquitous that it is taken for granted.
Bluetooth has some connectivity issues that require troubleshooting to overcome. We are all familiar with proximity issues and Bluetooth headsets often need to be properly attenuated. Bluetooth is designed for low-power applications, and its ability to connect is therefore limited. This is inherently a part of the technology that is a tradeoff- limited range for lower power usage for connectivity overall. Bluetooth can be hacked, and may connect to unauthorized devices under certain circumstances that may put users at risk.
Most recently, the Bluetooth L3 codec has been enabled in beta for use on Apple AirPods that will be the low-power increased quality protocol for headphones, which are commonly used with new headphones. It’s hard to believe we once used headphones with cumbersome wires, and Bluetooth is an ideal application for headphone and cellphone communication and utilization. The new AirPods will utilize a new processor to fully integrate the new codec.
Despite the limitations and security risks, Bluetooth is effective. It has a range of 10-meters, and uses a small amount of power. It is commercially successful, and users purchase billions of units with Bluetooth technology annually.
