Technological improvements make our vehicles more interconnected, safe, easier to maintain and more effective overall. As a young man, I remember working on old cars and focused on mechanical components almost exclusively. Today’s cars are loaded with computers and are easier to diagnose by simply plugging them into electronic readers. The car itself is a platform upon which many new developments are being created, and as 5G and voice technology mature, the vehicle itself is becoming what is termed “vehicle to everything”. The car of tomorrow is a part of the interconnect grid and is an essential social unit.
Distracted driving is a major killer of drivers, and contributes to thousands of accidents every year. According to the NHTSA, 3,142 vehicle drivers and passengers died as a result of accidents involving distracted driving. Anything that takes the driver’s eyes off the road and attention from the detailed task of operating a motor vehicle contributes to distracted driving. In years past, drivers interfaced with their phones manually to use maps and communicate with each other, and the voice commands used were not efficient. Cloud computing and 5G speed of connection are changing that, and removing the risks of distracted driving. In addition, DUI is a major killer. According to the NHTSA, one American dies every 52-seconds in the USA due to DUI. We can remove these deaths entirely with cars that are self-driving, which is possible due to 5G and investment into the technology by companies including Tesla, Google, Waymo and others. Safety on the road is a major concern we can increase dramatically with the future connected automobile.
Vehicles now communicate with each other, and 5G is a major factor in real-time assessment. At close range, current technology allows communication between vehicles, and at further range 5G technology will be most effective. The current connected car is called “vehicle to everything” or V2X. Imagine a car that integrates with your phone, functions as an interconnect payment processing platform and is able to self-diagnose maintenance issues. The communication between vehicles enabled by 5G technology enables cars to travel faster and more efficiently, making commutes faster as machines take over. Imagine the gains you can realize when your car does the driving.
Cars continue to evolve with the times. The Model T showcased many new technologies that we use today, and some that have been lost to the sands of time. A car is now much more than a transportation method, it is part of a network of machines and systems on the cloud and 5G network.
