The Kookaburra.
I am very happy to share with fellow Feathered Friend lovers one of my favourite Australian birds...…..The Kookaburra.
Huge thanks to for organizing this very popular theme and thank you too, for the Feathered Friends team.
Kookaburras are large birds; the biggest members of the kingfisher family and can measure up to 18 inches in length. These striking looking birds are characterized by their large heads and big beaks. Typically, kookaburra heads and belly feathers are white and their wings and backs are mainly brown. Some species have blue feathers on their wings and tails.
Kookaburras are found in Australia, New Guinea and Tasmania and congregate in small family groups, choosing mainly forests and open woodlands to live. However, they are reasonably comfortable in suburban areas. In fact, I have had the pleasure of getting quite close to kookaburras at times but notice they keep a wary eye on me when I am attempting to take photos.
Adult kookaburras mate for life and quite often, their offspring are in no hurry to leave home. The parents remain in the same nesting area for years and it is not unusual to have extended family members offer assistance with the raising of chicks.
Due to the fact that they are territorial, Kookaburras defend their living areas to prevent other kookaburras from moving in. Their loud and very distinctive call warns others to keep their distance and respect the boundaries.
This call, which is heard mainly during sunrise and sunset, sounds very similar to human laughter and this is the sound that sets these special birds apart. One species in particular is what makes kookaburras so special. In fact, one species of kookaburra is known as The Laughing Kookaburra.
I have included a digital version of one of the kookaburra photos in keeping with my #alwaysadigital goal for most of my blogs.
Even though Kookaburras are members of the kingfisher family, they don’t dive for fish to eat like Kingfishers because their dietary preferences are insects, mice, small reptiles and snakes.
THANK YOU FOR VIEWING. HAVE A GREAT DAY.
