The very striking looking Australian King-Parrots are the only Australian parrots with completely red heads. The females are very similar to their male counterparts except that their head and breast areas are completely green making them easy to identify. Both sexes have red bellies, green backs, and long, green tails. King Parrots are often found in pairs or in family groups.
They love rainforests or wet sclerophyll forests and are common along the east coast and ranges of Australia in areas extending from Cooktown in Queensland through to Port Campbell in Victoria. King Parrots spend a large amount of time foraging for seeds and fruit in trees and they appear to be increasing in numbers in well-treed areas. Artificial feeding stations have been erected amongst fruiting trees to encourage them to thrive.
