I require all my students to read Frederic Bastiat’s essay “The Law”.
It was written in 1850, but has a lot to teach us, even today, about the proper role of law and government.

If our laws were restricted in their scope the way Bastiat envisioned then voting wouldn’t matter much, because it would never be lawful to take from one person or group in order to give to another person or group.
