@null is an account with no owner, an account to which no one has access (and to which no one can ever gain access).

Any tokens sent to @null can never be used.

Sending tokens to @null is the financial equivalent of burning cash (i.e. literally burning the bills themselves); it reduces the amount of the currency in circulation, making the remaining currency more valuable.
