How many budding game developers are reading this? I know I used to entertain the thoughts of creating my own games. After barely getting beyond the “Hello World” tasks in various programming languages, I fell back on my interest in writing about games instead. Now we have interesting to use engines that do most of the work for us. The problem is those engines are mostly only available for PC’s. No longer is that true, thanks to 3DSage, you can create 3D levels directly on your Nintendo Game Boy Advance.
Early but Powerful
It is wild to me just how powerful and cool 3DSage is, even at this early stage of development. Do you want to recreate a famous level from a game like Doom? Go for it. Want to make something original? Here you go.
It is amazing just how smooth 3DSage is already. It is smooth, textures do not turn to trash when up close or viewed at odd angles.
Speaking of textures, you can open the editor while in the level and adjust lighting and other options. This is impressive and calls back to the Build Engine, which I believe allowed “live” editing as well. There are a few holdbacks
No doors and no enemies. Yet.
Right now, you can only create levels, not populate them, nor segment them off with doors and other such obstacles.
It will be interesting to see where 3DSage goes as it continues to develop. Right now, the developer is looking for a publisher to help bring 3DSage to market with physical releases in boxes, on a cart, complete with an instruction manual.
I wonder if there would be some option to move levels to PCs for trading with friends. If there is a way to do that and a way to update textures and do more than just levels (enemies, add elements for different genres, etc) then 3DSage might become the defacto 3D game engine on Game Boy Advance made for fans/indie developers (rather than just being the only one).
