Wolfenstein 3D came out in early 1992 while Commodore 64 was discontinued in mid-1994 but the two never met. Officially anyhow, spiritually they will. This raycasting engine by YouTube creator, jimo9757 is self-described as inspired by the classic id Software title. The impressive part of this work in progress is just how clear that influence is, even at this early stage.
Not only do I think they would not care, principal staff, or former staff, would probably be very impressed with this work. Throw some Nazis (whatever flavor you desire; it is your imagination) in this and it could easily pass as a demake of Wolfenstein 3D already. It just has that “feel” based on the gameplay videos released so far.
There is something about the graphic style, the minimalist capabilities of the Commodore 64 are very reminiscent of what id Software did in 1992. It just looks so impressive, reminding me of the first time I saw Wolfenstein 3D in action.
Even more impressive to know this is a Commodore 64 running it.
I have no clue what programming magic was performed to get this running so smoothly, or at all, on a Commodore 64. I won’t pretend to know. I just know this is simply amazing and leaves me wondering just how much more can be done while maintaining a decent frame rate.
Obviously, right now there are no enemies to shoot/avoid and no weapons or other pickups. This will surely change in upcoming updates so we just have to be a little patient here (hard for me as a fan). Jimo9757 clearly knows what they are doing here. Please head over to their YouTube channel and show them some support and let them know what you think of their project.
