The original Tomb Raider is being ported to the Sega 32X. Yes, that Sega 32X. While the platform has long since been discontinued, that has not stopped fans from continuing to support it. What is interesting is how far fans are able to push the hardware without official development kits either.
Almost A Match Made In Video Game Heaven
I seem to remember, but cannot find proof, that at some point, Tomb Raider was intended for the Sega 32X. I believe it was an interview Core Design did with Gamefan Magazine back in the day. Sadly, I have long since sold my Gamefan collection so I cannot source the issue. I do know Core was close with Sega, many of their titles on Sega CD were standouts one way or another, same for the Sega Genesis and Game Gear. Core Design were a developer Sega should have bent over backwards for.
I can only imagine how the Sega 32X might have been received had Core continued development of Tomb Raider for the add-on. Maybe had Sega released the Neptune console they would have. Sadly, the timing was just not right for Tomb Raider to appear on the 32X as the add-on was not on store shelves by the time Tomb Raider was released. It was already discontinued and discounted to move the last stock available.Voodoo Magic At Work
I really have no other explanation as to how they are making this work without official software development kits. People that do this stuff are very smart and ingenious, that is pretty much a fact.
I know this port, and the one for 3DO, is using the OpenLara engine and the PC textures. That means this could be optimized a bit if textures were formatted for the Sega 32X platform. What is here is quite impressive already.
This is just the first level and there is no audio. What is here is literally the first level of Tomb Raider running on the Sega 32X. If you are a retro gamer then you probably appreciate just how phenomenal that is.
