Atari continues to re-release old games on newly manufactured cartridges. The interesting twist here is, these games are not only compatible with the newer Atari 2600+ but the original platform. In this case, they have announced three new Atari 7800 cartridges. Your definition of “classic” may vary here though.
First up, we have Fatal Run, the newest title on this list having been released in 1990. Developed by Sculptured Software, who developed SNES titles such as Doom, Super Star Wars, Mortal Kombat I and II, and Mortal Kombat 3 on SNES and Sega Genesis. Fatal Run apparently holds the distinguished title of being the last release for the Atari 2600, a title it shares with Klax.
Your goal in Fatal Run is to deliver a vaccine to survivors at the end of each level. The world has apparently barely survived an apocalyptic event, and not all survivors want you delivering that vaccine. You are tasked with collecting power-ups and weapons as you drive to the next stop. Money earned on your drive can be used to pay for repairs and upgrades in shops (the world may have ended but capitalism lives on).
This is the first time North American gamers will get to officially play Fatal Run. The original releases for Atari 2600 and the Atari 7800 were UK/Europe only releases.
Food Fight is the next title on the itinerary for the new Atari 2600+ re-releases. Anyone not familiar with this title probably did not grow up on Atari, at least checked out on the company before the 7800.
You are tasked with getting the food on the other side of each level. Sounds simple, right? Well, there are four chefs out to stop you and they know how to throw food. Thankfully, so do you, and you must throw a lot of food. Get the food with as little food thrown as possible to maximize your score.The most interesting title on this Atari 2600+ re-release announcement, at least to me, is Ninja Golf. I only learned about this title years after the Atari 7800 was long gone from store shelves and I never found a copy at yard sales.
You play golf, as a ninja, and fight other ninjas, even a dragon, on your quest to complete a round of golf. It sounds whimsical, and it is, it is an Atari game after all.
At least the enemies are nice enough to wait for you to take your shot before jumping you. Video games do not get much wilder than this.
