I am right there with you on both counts. I often find myself wondering the same thing about many ports of games, some I cover here while others I just don't feel are worth writing up.
I know it is their time and talent but why potentially waste it on a project that can be taken away from you? Why not put that effort and time into an original project that can show your skills off?
At least with this port they are adding Super Game Boy style borders, color and black and white options, and apparently not much else as they intend to make this as close to the original as possible.
As I said in the video, I was hoping for more than just Tetris played with a Sega Genesis controller.
