I learned real quick about difficult platforming games that were difficult just for the sake of difficulty when I saw what some people were doing in hacks or one of the Super Mario Maker games. I just don't see how those are "fun" but it is not for me to decide that for others, I just won't be experiencing it because I know it is just frustration, and won't be fun, for me.
I know there were a few platformers over the decades that were commercially released like that. I can't pinpoint them right now but thanks to rentals I was able to avoid them and not get stuck with a $50+ coaster because I could not enjoy them.
