Sony has had amazing marketing teams from day one, at least when they entered the hardware market (can't really compliment their subsidiarys in gaming such as Sony Music Group, etc).
Look at their response to Sega and the Saturn being $399.99, Steve Case came out and just said, "$299" and walked off stage. In less than 5 seconds from getting on stage to leaving, Sony destroyed months work on preparing a presentation by Sega.
Then when Nintendo 64 came out, Sony announced they were limiting first party releases to $49.99 max. Nintendo could not compete, Sega tried but it was probably the final nail in the coffin for Saturn but Sega of Japan was too stubborn to give in just yet.
For all their missteps, Sony has made some amazing leaps that worked out great for them. Oddly, most are just waiting on the competition to put their foot in their mouths and replying with a simply solution to the problem Sega, Microsoft, or Nintendo made.
I am not saying Sony is perfect. Their use of proprietary memory cards on the PSP and Vita are the biggest reason most people wouldn't buy one. Who was willing to pay $15+ per gig for a Memory Stick when an SD/or Micro was down to around $3 per gig at that time?
I only got a PSP after adapters popped up allowing the use of Micro SD cards. Sure the load times were a little longer but I didn't notice, even after getting a Memory Stick (4 gigs for $55) I still didn't notice the difference against my dual 16 gig Micro SD's.
