Facts. The jump from what was on PC around 1993, for me it was the height of point and click games, to then see Doom running on the same PC as the recent King's Quest game was mindblowing. It was just so different, visceral, well paced to ease new players in but also prepare seasoned fans that have put in time on it already.
Nothing compared for a long time. Then the fan levels started showing up, mods, total conversions and such started gaining traction in computer mags of the time - I had no idea about any of this. I remember the year before I graduated high school someone got their hands on some fan levels for Doom and it was all the rage at lunch for months.
Today, gamers get excited over a new paid skin in a game like Fortnite. It is just not the same, or I am just getting old.
