RayForce was the first entry in the popular "Ray" series of shooters. For those that do not know about this franchise, it is an overhead scrolling shooter series. First appearing in arcades, then on Sony PlayStation and Sega Saturn, RayForce brought additions to the genre.
The biggest addition is the lock-on technology. This allows you to target enemies, and parts of enemies, that your main gun may not be able to hit. For instance, enemies that are lower in the level than you are can be targeted with this lock-on tech.
