Endless games are something of a standard of early gaming. If you think Flappy Bird or Temple Run are the first of this genre then you need to do some research. Chasing the high score is something we have been doing for decades in retro gaming. Who remembers titles like Stampede? Night Driver? I could go on and on, the point is, this is a genre that has been around forever, almost since the early days of gaming. Now, with Raceway, we have a new entry on the Commodore 64 for everyone to enjoy.
As with most endless running games, there is little to no story here. You are simply chasing a high score while avoiding other bikers on the road. Not all other motorcyclists are your friend though so be careful when passing.
While Raceway lacks in story, it does not lack in other key points.
For instance, there are night and day cycles, multiple colors for other bikers, and according to Indie Retro News there is great engine sounds bringing the experience home a bit.
Graphically, Raceway is not going to win any awards. It is rather plain but for this genre, that is normal and often expected. Too much going on in the graphics can make it hard to discern our goals.
The graphics are clean and clear, that is what matters. Motorcyclists are easy to see and understand their intent at a glance. Even at night, the handle bars of the cycles are clearly visible, even when the rest of the bike and rider are near impossible to make out.
If you are looking for an engrossing storyline, fantastic graphics, and music and sound that will make you smile, go play a Hideo Kojima game. If you are looking for a simple pick up, play and enjoy yourself, title then maybe Raceway is for you.
