In today's money it was slightly over $1,000 for a 3DO at launch. MSRP at the time was like $799.99. outrageous.
I got one closer to the end, when they were $100 and some stores gave you 5 games of your choice with it. I remember getting tons of the games at $2 to $5 each around that time.
Other than that, I would not have had one either.
They screwed themselves over by outsourcing hardware rather than making it themselves and creating games to offset the loss on each console.
While the PSOne launched at about $300 back then, it has come out that Sony was losing at least $250 per console sold. Sega was in a similar loss per console.
They offset that with licensing to publish games by others, of course, as well as making their own gamea.
3DO hardware licensees were mostly S.O.L. on this front. I believe AT&It's version was aiming to reclaim on their investment via options involving phone service fees.
Not sure how Sanyo was planning to compete as I never saw them release any games or anything other than their 3DO.
Panasonic did release games though.
3DO eventually started releasing games but I think it was too late. They should have been working on games, engines, etc for the platform before they licensed the first console manufacturer.
Lots of missteps here. Prices was just the most obvious.
