I am right there with you on feeling my age with some of these games. That is what makes it so much fun to write them up though. I get a chance to relive a little bit of my younger years again, sometimes my childhood. It is a good feeling.
I agree with you about the transition to newer entries. Sometimes the older games are just more fun for whatever reason. Maybe it was simpler controls, maybe it was the environment we played them, maybe we just enjoyed those games more. I can play a mean round of Quake or Doom but struggle with the latest entries in either franchise. There is just so much going on, so much to remember, it seems the blast and go mechanics are a thing of the past in those newer games.
I still play Diablo 1, thanks to the GoG.com release, and hope Diablo 2 is going to receive a similar re-release. I tried playing Diablo III on PlayStation 3 and just cannot get into it. I want to but something feels "off" with it. I don't have that connection to the story, the characters, or game world that I felt with the first two games. Maybe it is because I have partially burned out on that type of game. The original Diablo, to me, was all action and kicking butt. It was awesome. Diablo 2 was just more of that. Diablo III? I don't feel is that great. Maybe it is because I played it on a console and the others on PC.
Similarly, I love Need for Speed Underground 2 but newer entries - meh. Same with the Mario games. I can play All-Stars on Super Nintendo all day long and enjoy it for nearly every second. Newer takes, including the remakes on DS/3DS I just feel like something is missing. That charm, that childhood connection, is not there for me.
