If you are like me, you probably have no clue what Only Up is about. I had to look it up, having only seen a few short clips on platforms like TikTok and YouTube prior to seeing this Mario 64 take on the game idea. Your goal is rather simple, go only up. Can’t fault the devs for being complicated with their game title, can we? Well, someone has taken Mario 64 assets and created a Mario themed version of Only Up.
Only Up was released in early 2023 and seemingly quickly became a Twitch sensation. That may explain why I never heard of it till recently, I am not big on watching streamers live.
Steam reviews are mixed on Only Up, some are quite funny. Wait, gotta get back on topic here and save that apple pie recipe for later.
Most reading this are familiar with Mario 64 on the Nintendo 64 console, or one of the few re-releases that title received. It was Mario’s first foray into 3D (I am purposefully ignoring anything Virtual Boy related as that was not the same “3D”).
Mash Only Up and Mario 64 and you get Only Up 64. What is interesting is how well it seems to work.
Only Up 64 is interesting. It brings a lot of the traits that the original game had. Assets are mixed up, much like Only Up’s pieces that seemingly don’t go together. One minute you are climbing castle pieces then grassy pieces, pipes, or even giant enemies.
According to Romhacking.com, Only Up 64 will take about 25 minutes or so to complete. There are a couple of modes to try as well.
