Early last year, Twitter, now known as X, announced they would begin charging for enterprise access to Twitter integration API’s. This means companies such as Sony, Nintendo, Microsoft, etc would have to start paying for access to the platform via their respective consoles. It effects other corporations as well but for this article, gaming is what matters. That deadline is nearing and Nintendo has announced they will not pay the fees.
The announcement was made in February of 2023 by Twitter. In April that same year, Microsoft immediately announced they would not be switching over to the new pay for access API model. In November of 2023, Sony followed suit, leaving support for Twitter integration behind.
Nintendo is the final console manufacturer, as stated by Kotaku.com to drop support for Twitter integration on their platform.
This is particularly financially devastating to Twitter due to the fact Microsoft disabled the integration on Xbox *and* Windows Game Bar, as well as Microsoft runs a rather hefty advertising division that also dropped Twitter completely.Microsoft literally represented three platforms driving traffic and finances to Twitter.
Nintendo officially dropped out of the integration via their Twitter announcement.
Interestingly, in the Nintendo Twitter thread is people posting their emotions over the decision. One stated it was unfair to lose access to Twitter when Nintendo charges for online connectivity. Others have voiced it being unfair of Nintendo.
The interesting key point here is, the Twitter API is available starting at $42,000 up to $210,000 for the highest available tier. That is a lot of money every month. That is a ton of money so that people can share their Animal Crossing pics or whatever Nintendo Switch players are sharing.
Where do you fall on this? Should fans be able to demand access to things on the Internet, regardless of costs, on their console especially when paying for access to the Internet via that console?
