Back in the day gaming was wild. Almost as wild as what fans are doing with that hardware today. We are not seeing rumors of Mortal Kombat on 3DO or Atari Jaguar, fans are doing it. Well, Mortal Kombat II is being developed for the 3DO console. I was completely blindsided by this development when I first saw it. I will cover the Jaguar port of the original Mortal Kombat later when there is more than just “pics” to show.
Back in the day in the gaming publications of the time, one published a rumor of Mortal Kombat III coming to the 3DO. While this work in progress port is not that game, it is still interesting. Mortal Kombat II is a good game, I personally spent many hours with the game on the Super Nintendo performing Jax’s fatality for my elderly mom. She would laugh with glee then enter a coughing fit that lasted almost as long as it took me to get to another fatality for her.
We know the 3DO never got any Mortal Kombat games, it only got two digitized fighting games that I am aware of. Who knows the name of those fighting games? Hint, one was the first game of a developer that would go onto make millions of copies selling games for Sony.
The 3DO was just not able to gain enough market share to make it a viable platform for many name brand companies to come over. I believe Super Street Fighter II Turbo was programmed by someone other than Capcom (though it was a great port).
Blame it on whomever you want – Panasonic (the only 3DO manufacturer to make games too), Acclaim (who, I believe held the home console rights to Mortal Kombat II) or Midway/Williams (makers of Mortal Kombat) but the point is, Mortal Kombat never came to the 3DO.
Thanks to 3DO HD over on YouTube fans of Mortal Kombat II may finally get to play this version of the arcade game.
Right now, there is no demo, preview, or otherwise for fans to check out. Only the YouTube videos detailing the work of the developer. They have many videos available showing off a ton of their work.
