Do you remember the 3DO console? It was basically the high end of gaming in the early to mid-90s, if we are going by mostly price. It was unattainable for many of us. I know I didn’t get one till the PlayStation and Saturn were already launched and Electronic’s Boutique was clearance pricing the console and games. I remember reading an issue of Gamefan Magazine back then and seeing an announcement blurb about, I want to say, Mortal Kombat 3 coming to 3DO. That never happened as the console was discontinued shortly after that, or at least rumors start circulating, but that has not stopped a fan from doing what retro gaming fans do.
It looks like 3DO HD over on YouTube is working to make this a one to one arcade to home port of Mortal Kombat 2. I am all for that personally. At least get that part hammered out before adding in personal touches.
While I do love to see changes to these types of ports, if I wanted a 1:1 then I would just play the original, in instances like this, arcade faithful may be more valuable. The 3DO was not exactly burning up the arcade ports genre.
Sure, we got a Super Street Fighter II Turbo and Samurai Shodown port, but outside of those, arcade ports on the 3DO were sparse. Much like “traditional” video games, arcade ports were hard to come by for fans.
It is interesting just how detailed the graphics are for this port of Mortal Kombat 2. Anyone remember playing Way of the Warrior or, ugh, Shadow: War of Succession on 3DO? I remember the graphics being impressive for the time but they certainly have not aged all that well, especially Shadow.
This port of Mortal Kombat 2 looks crisp and impressive. It is not 1:1 but man is it close.
What entry in the Mortal Kombat series is your favorite? Mine has to be MK2 because my mom loved watching me do the fatalities for her (she liked Jax’s arm ripping off the best).
