If you grew up on games like Super Mario Bros 3 then you remember a simpler time in gaming. We didn’t need realistic, virtual reality, HD, graphics and sounds to have fun. Games had clear objectives and dangers. Kitsune Zero, a prequel to Kitsune Tails, has that 8-Bit platformer charm locked down.

Run and jump through Japanese lore galore

Now that I think about it, there are very few 2D side scrolling action platform games heavily featuring Japanese lore. Kitsune Zero is just that and it is quite interesting.

Your task as Yumi is to stop the evil Ogre Fang Clan from taking over the world. Along your quest you will interact with spirits as well as very real people and creatures. Some are good, others are bad.

Kitsune Zero features:

  • Play as a cute fox girl
  • Experience new graphics, and a new story with voice acting
  • Explore twenty four new bonus levels featuring brand new enemies
  • Challenge yourself with the optional hard mode
  • Save your progress and resume playing from any level you’ve previously reached
  • Enjoy new and remastered music
  • Guaranteed 100% free from American electoral politics
  • Fully backwards compatible with Super Bernie World any% speedruns

That old school charm

When coming into the 2D side scrolling action platform genre it is imperative to understand where your game will fall. The creator of Kitsune Zero has set their sights on being as much like Super Mario Bros as they can be.

*That is a great thing*

From the spinning fire ropes to the level layout, there is a very “Mario” feel to the action. Check out Yumi’s running animation. Powerups have similar effects, familiar enemies are here as well (flying turtles, anyone?) and the animation.

The animation on Yumi screams, in a great way, Mario. Just look at the video above for proof.
