Improved Doom for Super Nintendo Coming from Limited Run Games
Anyone that remembers the original Super Nintendo version of Doom knows just how much hype was around this high-profile release. It was mostly a flop because of how bad the port came out. Slow frame rate, no ceilings or floors, and quite limited animation enemies (many had no ‘back’ so no sneaking up on them). Limited Run Games announced a new, enhanced port that has been reworked. Thanks to the Doom on SNES source code having been released, this improved version could be created.
The Cartridge is Not Red
Maybe this was a design choice to separate this version of Doom from the original, maybe it was just cheaper, but the cartridge is not red. I know a lot of people reading this are going to be upset over that fact, but it is what it is.
Do you want a better port or a red cartridge? Those are your two choices for Doom on SNES.
Improvements Fans Can Expect
If you can get over the lack of red dye in the plastic of the cartridge you can enjoy levels that were omitted from the first version. Also, a fourth episode – Thy Flesh Consumed.
Also, there will be a special controller available that features rumble support. Controls have been reworked too. You can circle strafe, wait you couldn’t in the original SNES version? The shoulder buttons are right there!
The controller with rumble functionality is in the air as far as release. Considering Limited Run Games are releasing two versions of this new improved Doom for Super Nintendo, Standard and Collector’s Edition, neither graphic showing the controller, is concerning.
Limited Run Games usually are pretty good about showing everything you are getting in their graphic promos. That leads me to think the controller will be made available separately. Please note, there is no word on this at all and I am simply speculating. The two versions of Doom will be available in a limited capacity of 666 copies each.
Differences Between Versions
Standard Edition has a retro style box and a mun metal colored cartridge. Also in the box will be a 12”x16” poster and instruction booklet.
Collector’s Edition buyers will get the poster, instruction booklet PLUS a certificate of authenticity, a premium embossed foil box, and a blood splattered gun metal colored cartridge (with slightly different label versus the Standard Edtiion).
There is no information available at this time on exactly what Super FX chip was enhanced or how it was enhanced to make this release happen.
