When Valve released Half-Life 2 in 2004 (wait, it has been that long?), I am pretty sure they did not plan on someone modding the game to resemble Resident Evil (1996, Capcom). That is exactly what happened though, sure, it took 19 years for someone to look at the Half-Life 2 world and say, “This needs fixed camera angles.” What is weird though is just how well and cool it looks and works.
Fans doing what fans do
Half-Life 2 began life as a First-Person Shooter (FPS) but thanks to the engine’s capabilities, it is now a 3rd Person survival horror game. I mean, this is pretty cool, I must say. This is Resident Evil meets Half-Life 2 through and through.
You have an inventory system, fixed camera angles, Half-Life 2 enemies, and scarce weapons and ammo to defend yourself. The sheer amount of detail that has been put into Lost and Damned, the total conversion here, is astounding.
A total conversion worthy of your time
Lost and Damned starts out with your character laying on the ground beside a burning plane that clearly crashed. As with most games, your memory is shot and you must jog it as part of your adventure here.
Lost and Damned pulls a few things from Capcom’s Resident Evil. The door animation between rooms is here as well as a familiar menu system. That is on top of barrowing the idea for a fixed camera angle horror theme.Tank controls also make the jump, but who is counting?
The game world is very much Half-Life 2 though. You are not traversing a mansion here, instead you are obviously in a facility of some sort. That is something Resident Evil nev… Oh, well, um, never mind.
If you are interested in checking out Lost and Damned then head over ModDB and grab the file. While there, read up on how to make this total conversion work, it is not as simple as download and double click an EXE file.
Old school fans know that most total conversions were never that simple anyhow.
