When Nintendo released GoldenEye 64 back in 1997 I am sure they knew it would be a hit, maybe not as big as it became but still a hit. I remember seeing this game in action at a friends house, his dad bought an N64 and the game at the same time. He was not a gamer but he was a big James Bond fan and he just got a bonus at his job, and started a 2 week vacation. It was like it was meant to be for him. I learned years later that he never became a gamer outside of this game too. Talk about dedication to a franchise. Now, in 2026, we are seeing HD texture packs for GoldenEye 64 via certain emulators that allow texture packs to be loaded.
The first thing that struck me when checking out the video embedded below was the lack of blur. Sure, the original looked amazing on a CRT in 1997 but for many, me included, those textures have not aged gracefully. There was a fair bit of blur, but we didn’t really notice due to the televisions we played on.
Seeing the world of GoldenEye 64, this clear and detailed is like seeing the game again for the first time. Not like I played it much on an N64 in the last 20 years or so anyhow, just this is beyond impressive.
There is also a decompile project available for GoldenEye 64 to run the game on your PC natively. That project requires you to provide a ROM of GoldenEye 64 so that the necessary files can be pulled. Those files are copyrighted and Nintendo will sue the developer for providing a version of the project with them included.
The decompile project will be able to make use of your computer’s hardware beyond what an emulator can do. This means higher resolutions, better frame rates, keyboard and mouse controls, and more.
