If you grew up with computers in the 80’s and early 90’s then you probably know about ASCII characters. Basic games like Rogue used them for their graphics. This allowed for EXTREMELY small games. There were tons of games that used these graphics for art. Now we can add a Ghosts n Goblins game to that extremely long list.
Capcom is not known for being kind to fan remakes and the like so let’s keep this one under our hats for a moment. Titled Sir Arthur, this game carries many similarities to Capcom’s game. Enough that legal could probably step in no problem.
What is cool here is, while it is minimalist in graphics, everything is there and then some. Corpses animate as they come up out of the ground, red devils are identifiable, and there is tons of shading in the graphics. Great use of colors and the limited graphics abound here.
One thing that Ghosts n Goblins is known for is the difficulty. While I have not played Sir Arthur, I can see by the number of times they die that the difficulty is the standard setting here. Infuriating.
Just like old school gamers like it.
As mentioned already, the basics are here in Sir Arthur. It is quite amazing what they achieved with ASCII art, well, PSCII art on The Commodore 64 (just has a few extra graphic pieces). You can head over to csdb.dk to check out pics and more information on Sir Arthur.
