Not sure if this qualifies as the longest amount of time between games but Flashback 2 has been announced. The original game came out in 1992 and hit a few platforms, originally Sega Genesis and Super Nintendo. Later fans would see ports to Commodore Amiga, CD-I, 3DO and more modern platforms such as the PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch. It is being published by… Oh crap, Microids. You may be familiar with them, they are also doing Inspector Gadget and Operation Wolf Returns (delayed). Anyhow, let’s look at Flashback 2.
Astute fans of this franchise, which many include Out of this World/Another World, may remember there being another game touted as the sequel. Those fans would be right as Fade to Black, released in 1995 for the first PlayStation console, was marketed as a sequel to Flashback. Now, we have another game laying claim to that title.
Fade to Black was a 3D affair while Flashback 2 is more like a 3D side-view action adventure. This angle appears to give us a bit of depth to work with while traversing the worlds of Flashback 2.
Some levels play more like a 2.5D side-view action adventure as well.
The choice of camera angle is interesting, so far, I like it.
Based on the video released by Microids, we can expect a return to the jungle of Flashback 1. The graphics are impressive, as they should be since this is coming to Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4 and 5 and Xbox One series of consoles.
Flashback 2 is currently slated for November 2023 release. Don’t hold your breath, the trailer above is the second trailer for Flashback 2, the first trailer touted the release date of 2022. Already delayed once.
I love the idea of seeing new takes on classic games like this but can we get someone other than Microids behind them? It is quickly becoming a case of “tuck it back into your memory” at this point if Microids is involved because fans can expect delay after delay.
