Doom has been modded in every direction you can probably think of. From changing the graphics, and some of the gameplay mechanics, to look like popular console games to adjusting graphics, Doom has been there and probably done that already. One mod that I was not aware of, and the reason I am making this available, is wireframe Doom. I refer to modes like this as “minimalist” so please go easy on me if I interchange the terms here. Just be prepared to have your eyes strained after playing a little too long.
At first glance, when I saw the video by YouTube creator, Necro Insomniac, I thought this was for the Vectrex console from the early 80’s. Or at least a “mock up” of what Doom might have looked like on that rare, classic, console.
Nope, this is apparently the work of acclaimed Doom modder, DynamiteKaitorn who has been doing these mods for a while now.
The little sway of your character as they move around the level is still there and works even better giving this mod feel if you will. It feels surreal but that little bob in the walking animation subliminally draws your mind to believe in this world. I have seen a few Doom mods remove that and it is jarring, even if just under the skin.
Wireframe Dynamite 7 obviously will be better received in smaller doses. For me at least this is due to eye strain, even though later sections do provide more to look at, and better contrasting color decisions, it is still straining on the eyes.
Head over to the DoomWorld forums and give DynamiteKatorn some support and grab their level WAD file and enjoy Dynamite Wired for yourself.
