Chrono Trigger Receives Improvements Via Newest Update

Square Enix have decided to give Chrono Trigger fans on mobile a few improvements in their latest update. Some of these are much needed, others are appreciated, and some are “eh”. The list is myriad but short so hang on.

Chrono Trigger, the venerable RPG keeps going

Originally released in 1995 on the Super Nintendo console, honestly, at the tail end of its lifespan too, Chrono Trigger set hearts afire. Fans that took a chance on this game were rewarded with quite an experience, one that we are still celebrating almost 30 years later.

Chrono Trigger was quite a departure from Square Enix’s other role-playing game (RPG) offerings. At least in North America. In Japan, they were a little more adventurous with releases. Here, they stuck pretty much to the successful formula of Final Fantasy style games. That means we never got an official Front Mission release here in the 16-bit days (though fans have translated it since).

The new update brings improvements

Over on Android Police they collect many of the improvements for us. Notably:

The biggest improvement is full screen support, up to 21:9 aspect ratio. This is great news for fans that were saddled with playing on a smaller screen on their mobile device.

Next, you can speed up battles to 1.5x, this will cut down on overall grind as you fight the same creatures for the millionth time.

There is also an “Extras” section for mobile gamers. This is where you will find a music player, image gallery, etc. Neat addition that does nothing to change the fundamental game but rewards fans.

Do not get used to these updates though. It is quite obvsious that Square Enix is not used to doing them. Or is that willing? The Google Play Store version spend two years since the last update. The Steam version is going on over four years since the last update. So, enjoy it, savor it, because the next, if there is another update, is not likely anytime soon.
