The Commodore 64 is the workhorse of 80s computers; it receives more games and ports than any other computer of the time. The C64 is going on five decades since it was first released to the world (it was released in 1982) and still receiving new games. One interesting title is Cavernario by Adrian Marcel Bonnette. The name is a hint I am sure reading this you get immediately.
Obviously, Cavernario has pulled inspiration from Super Mario Bros. One look at the screenshots will tell even a blind man there is that resemblance. One difference is, in Cavernario your character can throw projectiles upward at flying creatures.
So far, gameplay seems limited to moving left and right on single screens. There are enemies on the ground and in the air at the top of the screen. The short clip of Cavernario in action I saw the character did not attempt to climb those platforms.
Obviously, the food on those platforms hints that you will be able to use it in some manner, health or collecting to move onto the next level.
I want to stress this being a work in progress. That means likely everything could change before it is completed. The developer has already mentioned in replies in The Commodore 64/128 Facebook Group that they are working on changing trees and other details.
This is great news that the developer is taking constructive criticism and implementing what works for their vision of Cavernario. I know from experience, it can be tough to put yourself out there and have people tear it apart ruthlessly and not be nice with criticism. At least here, people are being respectful, I hope that sentiment continues.
