Of all the crowdfunded consoles of the last decade or so, the Atari one was probably expected to succeed the least. Fast forward to today and Atari is the only one still standing, thriving even, and coming out with new hardware that is not crowdfunded, improving on their past. The Atari 2600+ is an interesting piece of tech that mixes modern with retro in a nostalgic manner that might just work.
There is no argument about how monumental the original Atari 2600 was to videogames. Without that console, gaming probably would not be what it is today. How do you keep that history alive though? Yet another compilation for modern platforms? Sure, why not, as long as people are buying it, keep making them.
Another way to keep that memory alive is to re-release classic platforms complete with replica controllers – the way these games were meant to be played.
Unlike re-releases such as the Flashback line, the Atari 2600+ goes one step farther in remembering the past. You can play the original Atari 2600 and 7800 cartridges on this new console. No need to mod your console like you could with certain Flashback models.
That Atari 2600+ is not only retro in looks and allows playing retro titles, it has the modern CX40+ controller to game. Also included in the box is a 10-in-1 cartridge featuring classics such as Adventure, Missile Command, and Yar’s Revenge among others.
Also included is an HDMI port so you can play Atari 2600 and 7800 games on your modern television with one wire.
Little niceties include the Atari logo lighting up when the console is being played, enlarged cartridge slot allowing easier plugging in and taking out of cartridges. There is also a widescreen mode available – no idea if this is “stretching” the image or true widescreen. With classic games, probably stretched, with newer “Enhanced” releases, it may be true widescreen.
