It's Monday again and once more I realised I spent the whole week always thinking about posting... but without actually doing it. 馃お
Since many of you seemed to like my photos of Amarante, today I'm sharing some more.
The first photo is the terrace from the S. Gon莽alo Caf茅/Restaurant. This is a spot the locals enjoy very much, since it's located on an outside plaza right next to the river. People come here more to talk about life than to eat or drink... The cup of coffee is just an excuse to sit down among friends and chat for a few moments. Or hours. 馃槑
The caf茅/restaurant takes its name after the church you see on the photo, the Church of S. Gon莽alo.
This is also a nice spot to enjoy the views over the Douro River, as you can see below. From here, you can see not only the river but also the other side of the town. Such a lovely sight! 馃
A few meters ahead you find a museum dedicated the local artists. But the main focus is an artist from the beginning of the XX century: Amadeo de Souza Cardoso, who died with just 30 years of age, in 1918. Check out his Wikipedia page to know more about the artist and see a few of his works.
There's a small garden in front of the building where - right in the middle of it - you can find a statue of Joaquim Pereira Teixeira de Vasconcelos, known as Teixeira de Pascoaes, his artistic name. He was a local poet from the XX century - a bit more lucky than Amadeo, as he lived quite a long life, having died at 75 years old.
The entrance of the museum is very cool, with a lovely mural in the style of his works. This is a nice piece of advertising which grabs your attention from a distance. 馃槑
The building is not tall and thus, the top of the church can be seen behind the building, which gives it a nice touch.
I think Amarante is a strange city with a lot of buildings with different sizes, shapes and styles all next to each other. The city has obviously started and expanded without any planning whatsoever, which is quite common in Portugal. Most of our large cities are like this. This can be a little confusing for outsiders as it's quite easy to get lost in these labyrinthic streets. Nothing that a modern phone with GPS can't solve. 馃き
