To summarize, Judah sends Tamar off to live with her father after his first two sons were smited by The Jesus before impregnating her. She is ordered to wait at her father’s place for his third son, Shelah, until he is old enough to imprgnate her.
Year’s later, Judah’s wife eventually passes away. Tamar dresses up like a harlot and waits for Judah to pass by as he is taking his sheep to be sheared. He pledges her one of the new kids from his flock if he’s allowed to come inside her. She accepts, but wants him to give her his signet, his bracelets, and his staff as collateral.
Genesis 38:20-23:
20 And Judah sent the kid by the hand of his friend the Adullamite, to receive his pledge from the woman's hand: but he found her not.
21 Then he asked the men of that place, saying, Where is the harlot, that was openly by the way side? And they said, There was no harlot in this place.
22 And he returned to Judah, and said, I cannot find her; and also the men of the place said, that there was no harlot in this place.
23 And Judah said, Let her take it to her, lest we be shamed: behold, I sent this kid, and thou hast not found her.
So Judah dutifully tries to honor his pledge. Notice that everyone tries to do the right thing in these passages, which is why everyone lives. In case it’s not clear, in verse 23, Judah is saying let her keep the stuff I gave her before. After all, we tried to find her to give her the promised lamb, but she was not to be found.
