Almost everyone has that sound that they can't bear; that sound that just irritates them instantly. Immediately they hear such sounds, they want to make it stop or leave that vicinity immediately.
For me, one such sound is the screeching sound that is made when a metal scrapes a surface. That sound irritates me immensely. It usually sends shivers down my spine. I don't know how to properly explain the feeling, but it gives me an electric sensation, mixed with irritation. The sound can be made when a metal chair scrapes the floor; or when someone scrapes a piece of metal across a hard surface or wall.
When someone around me does something to elicit that sound, I quickly tell that person to stop. Such a thing has caused an issue between me and a friend of mine.
We were both kids. He knew I disliked the screeching sound of metal scraping a surface. However, that fateful day, he kept using the metal to scrape a wall, thus irritating me in the process with the resulting sound. He saw that I was having a hard time. He saw I was uncomfortable, but he still continued.
I don't know if he resolved in his heart to piss me off that day. I told him several times to stop, but he was stubborn and he continued. Eventually, we ended up in a heated kid's quarrel. It's not a moment I'm proud of, but that's how irritated and angry I was. Our friendship ended that day.
Still talking of metals, I also dislike the sound that is made when a metal blade is used to cut though another metal or wood. The feeling I get is distasteful.
Another sound I hate is the sound made when styrofoam padding is scraped on a surface. The feeling I get about this one is worse. The irritation is intense. I usually end up getting away from that environment. For those who may not know what I refer to as styrofoam padding, it is that white, foam-like object used in packaging electronic devices to serve as a cushion.
When I was a kid, other kids would play with styrofoams, scraping them across a wall. It always irked me. Whenever I was playing with my peers and I heard that sound, I would end the play there and then. Because of that sound, I disliked styrofoams. I didn't even want to set my eyes on it, not to talk of playing with it. Kids in my time had a lot of fun with styrofoams, but it was never me.
Most times, I wonder how some people don't get irritated by that sound. Like, how can anyone even tolerate such a sound that sends shivers through my body?
Most times, I wish the people that make these styrofoam paddings would stop making them and replace them with something else that doesn't make that irritating sound.
