Actually there is an active alkaloid inside, called LSA which is the pure organic form of LSD.
It was used for performing transcedental rituals into the spirit world, where all the gathered knowledge and wisdom is collected, and it is still availabale nowadays via the same way. Either you take mushrooms, cactus or other ethnobotanicals, the cosmic database is open for anybody at any time.
