Loy Krathong is a festival that is celebrated in Thailand on the first full moon of the 12th Lunar month in the Thai calendar, usually being at the end of November. This year it was today, on the 22nd of November. It is the festivities to worship/pay respects to the river or water gods by praying and offering a "Krathong" - basket of flowers, candle and inscent sticks. The offering is done, so that you ward away bad luck and bring in good luck.

This year, my mother decided to learn and make our own "Krathong". She went to a workshop on Tuesday to learn the traditional way of making "Krathong". She came back home this morning after some errands and went to cut down a banana tree. She used a section of its trunk as a base for the "Krathong" and then covered it in banana leafs. "Loy" means float, so the basket has to float. The modern "Loy Krathongs" are made out of Styrofoam, which is bad for the environment as its not biodegradable. Others use a bread base, so that the fishes can be offered food.
