It is quite funny how I started weaving! I had already moved from Athens to the island of Crete a couple of years ago, when I saw a banner (yes, a banner on the internet!) advertising frame loom weaving lessons in Athens. Till then I had never thought of weaving, although I always loved handmade items. But have you ever felt that you must do something without knowing why? Well, first of all the seminar was taking place in Athens. 2 hours driving from my village to the port, 10 hours by boat to Piraeus and almost an hour from the port to that place. Plus it was an expensive seminar and I had no spare money. What did I do? I went! Only for the first two lessons to see what was it about. And I fell in love with this ancient art!

A special bonding was created between me and my teacher, Vassiliki Sofianou. The moment I saw her, I knew that she was the main reason I was there. A weaver, an artist and a generous teacher!

The damage was done! I fell in love, but could not afford neither the travel cost neither the seminar cost. But we kept contact with my teacher and I was practicing a bit myself on my small frame loom. Met her once again and gave me 2 private lessons, fast forward learning is the only way I can describe it. She liked the way I was weaving and I was amazed by the miracle of transforming a thread to a cloth.

A few months later, Vassiliki sent me an email. An old lady in Athens was selling her big weaving loom and Vassiliki wanted me to take it. I replied that I had never thought of buying a loom and I couldn't afford it. It was too expensive! Next day, I had an email (right under my reply) that she had payed a deposit for the loom and we should talk about the details! I shouldn't miss it! I got super confused? Wasn't I clear enough? Hadn't I just said NO? A quick discussion with fotostef@fotostef where we both concluded that maybe I should try it and here I am with a huge loom in dozens pieces!

I had no idea how to connect the pieces and when I did (following a photo) I had no idea how to proceed. For quite some time I was looking at it! And after a lot of wondering and a quick video call with my teacher I started weaving. I had my own way and I always felt that there might be an easier or more correct way to do things. I had no confidence at all of showing my work.

A few years ago a weaving seminar took place in a nearby city and I went, only to understand that I already knew how to weave and that my way of using the loom was not wrong at all. Of course there were tips that made my life easier and so many techniques, but long story short, after a few weeks I was asked to be the teacher of the next weaving seminar, which I found hilarious, but gave me the extra confidence that I was lacking! How funny life can be! I had spent a few years thinking that I was not enough...

Now, Vassiliki is retired and she passed down to me all her yarns, some books and her notes, all the things she loved and wanted me to have. A precious heritage!

Weaving is important for me. Even in the last year and a half that I haven't done much due to a health issue that affected my hands, I was dreaming of patterns! I am trying to find my way back into this magic world of yarns and the pleasure of creating something with my own hands!
