ENGLISH
I confess that I was unaware of this disease, at least with that name, and I was amazed at my lack of knowledge on the subject; although the symptoms, health consequences and other aspects encompass this disease in the dangerous and increasingly recurrent work stress.
As soon as I read @emiliorios' initiative I thought about how I could contribute to such an important and detrimental health issue and I have decided to leave you my thoughts on the matter.
Four months ago my wife retired. In her work center and in many others that she visited because of her position within the company, she saw that many workers in those work centers were between 65 and over 80 years old. This is something that also happens in many workplaces like mine.
It happens that in Cuba retirement for women has to be with the requirement of 60 years of age and 25 years of work; while men must complete 30 years of work and 65 years of work. However, many people take retirement and rehire themselves because their salary is not enough to live on and they look for this option as a way to have more money coming in.
It is true that money is needed, but have you ever wondered what risks these people incur after being subjected to a work rhythm for which their organism is no longer prepared?
Unfortunately, in many cases they have to work on a par with other workers because they are centers that must comply with certain regulations, in order to meet production plans and be eligible for salary bonuses.
Many times what begins as a possible option to improve the life of the retiree becomes a sword of Damocles that sticks in his life and aggressively deteriorates his health.
On several occasions we find that these workers suffer from continuous fatigue, recurrent mental and psychological tiredness because they cannot keep up with the pace imposed by the workday, they are unable to sleep at night and fall asleep at their jobs.
My wife told me that she would not work anymore because retirement is enjoyable, but, I understand these people who must seek part of their economic solvency in something they have done all their lives.
One of the directors of one of the companies that has this situation in a more acute way asked me for advice and, from my experience as a teacher I could give her my considerations, from something I did when I was director of a basic secondary school and I had in the teaching staff some teachers who belonged to the third age and did not want to retire and in what I have done subsequently and continued to do.
More or less, this is what I told the principal:
The first thing you should do is to make sure that these people have the doctor's permission to continue working, based on the demands and conditions of the job. If this is the case, then you should look for a job where you can take advantage of their experience and knowledge and where they can perform to the best of their ability.
The above guarantees a favorable climate and that person sees that he can be productive and contribute which avoids a work climate that leads to a depressive state.
After achieving all this, he/she can perform some tasks in the work center that favor all workers, but, in an intentional way, have a positive impact on the elderly personnel. There could be a daily space, which could be in a schedule to be decided, to do gymnastics at work, to talk about the most important elements of the day, to find a way to make lunch time a different occasion, to do activities by areas and in the company and as many as you can think of.
I also told him that it would be good to involve people in a survey or a contest in which they propose what extra-work activities can be done to have a better stay in their second home.
Without knowing it, they will be contributing to avoid Burnout Syndrome, depression and all the stress that can be generated by reaching an age and seeing how life ends or how we are no longer useful, after having dedicated our lives to this work.
So much for my participation in the initiative. I don't know if I fulfilled the expectations, but I liked the subject and I wanted to contribute.
