Resulta que era el 27 de julio de 1993, estábamos inmersos en una crisis económica tan brutal como esta y no teníamos mucho a lo que aferrarnos para estar contentos. Por tal razón, cualquier acontecimiento positivo que tuviera que ver con Cuba y viniera de un cubano nos alegraba el alma y nos hacía olvidar por un momento tantas carencias y penurias.
¿Cuál fue ese hecho tan especial?
¿Quién fue el responsable de ello?
¿Qué sobrevino después de ese hecho?
Primero que nada, debo decir que tuve el orgullo y el honor de participar junto a él en los Juegos Escolares Nacionales de 1984, cuando ya él era reconocido como un gran atleta internacional, a pesar que sólo tenía 17 años.
Los dos competíamos en el deporte de atletismo categoría juvenil, él representando a su Matanzas querida, a pesar de estar ya en el equipo nacional y yo representando a mi provincia de Las Tunas. Para nada quiero compararme con este fuera de serie, como deportista y ser humano, pero es un hecho que nadie me puede quitar porque lo viví como testigo presencial.
Recuerdo que en esos juegos que se efectuaron en la Habana yo alcancé el lugar número 9 en la impulsión de la bala y él alcanzó la medalla y la condición de campeón nacional juvenil, pero ese no es el hecho más interesante, sino, que hizo un solo salto y lo realizó después que todos los atletas habían culminado. ¿Su nombre?......
Volviendo al hecho que nos trae a esta publicación he de decir que como admirador de los deportes y sobre todo, del atletismo, siempre me maravilló la técnica y elegancia de este saltador. Su técnica exquisita, su pulcritud al competir y sus medias blancas largas, su confianza en las competencias y su temor inmenso al mal tiempo o a la lluvia en la competencia que estuviera participando.
Otro elemento significativo en su vida fue los dos entrenadores que tuvo y cómo logró mantener sus resultados, a pesar que, con la muerte del José Godoy, a quien consideró un padre llegó a pensar que todo había terminado. De lo contrario se encargó Guillermo Torres con quien terminó la excelente carrera con la que comenzó.
En su palmarés están todos los títulos otorgados por la Federación Internacional de Atletismo: Campeón Olímpico, Campeón Mundial, Campeón Centroamericano, Campeón Panamericano y muchos más que no quiero plasmar para no aburrir al lector. Volvamos al 27 de julio de 1993
Ese día se celebraba un mitin atlético en Salamanca, España. Él tenía una conexión especial con este país y con esta ciudad en particular, en la que años antes había impuesto un record mundial.
Pues, en ese mitin volvió a hacer su estrategia de no desgastarse saltando mucho y esto lo hacía cuando quería hacer algo grande. Había declarado antes de la competencia que volvería a poner en la palestra pública internacional a Salamanca.
Y fue fiel a su palabra porque ese día en su último salto logró la hazaña de ser el humano que más cerca ha estado de besar las estrellas y jugar con el cielo. Su hazaña saltar 2 metros y 45 centímetros, o lo que es lo mismo 8 pies, o saltar por encima de una portería de fútbol.
Hace hoy exactamente 30 años de aquella hazaña protagonizada por un cubano, que también le valió el reconocimiento de Príncipe de Asturias que ganó en una porfía con otros grandes del deporte como Michael Jordan o Mónica Seles.
Gracias a este cubano por hacernos tan felices y regalarnos tantos momentos de alegrías con sus victorias. Su nombre: JAVIER SOTOMAYOR SANABRIA.

It happened to be July 27, 1993, we were immersed in an economic crisis as brutal as this one and we did not have much to hold on to in order to be happy. For that reason, any positive event that had to do with Cuba and came from a Cuban made our souls happy and made us forget for a moment so many shortages and hardships.

First of all, I must say that I was proud and honored to participate with him in the 1984 National School Games, when he was already recognized as a great international athlete, even though he was only 17 years old.
We both competed in the sport of athletics youth category, he representing his beloved Matanzas, despite already being in the national team and I representing my province of Las Tunas. I do not want to compare myself with this outstanding athlete and human being, but it is a fact that no one can take away from me because I lived it as an eyewitness.

Returning to the fact that brings us to this publication, I must say that as an admirer of sports and, above all, of athletics, I have always marveled at the technique and elegance of this jumper. His exquisite technique, his neatness when competing and his long white socks, his confidence in the competitions and his immense fear of bad weather or rain in the competition he was participating in.
Another significant element in his life was the two coaches he had and how he managed to maintain his results, even though, with the death of José Godoy, whom he considered a father, he thought it was all over. Guillermo Torres, with whom he finished the excellent career with which he began, took over.
In his list of honors are all the titles awarded by the International Athletics Federation: Olympic Champion, World Champion, Central American Champion, Pan American Champion and many more that I do not want to mention so as not to bore the reader. Let's go back to July 27, 1993
On that day an athletic meeting was being held in Salamanca, Spain. He had a special connection with this country and with this city in particular, where years before he had set a world record.
Well, in that meeting he did again his strategy of not wearing himself out jumping a lot and this he did when he wanted to do something big. He had declared before the competition that he would put Salamanca back in the international public eye.
And he was true to his word because that day in his last jump he achieved the feat of being the closest human being to kiss the stars and play with the sky. His feat was to jump 2 meters and 45 centimeters, or 8 feet, or to jump over a soccer goal.
