Hamburg Harbor City - EN
Hello friends,
Today I will make a walk through the new quarter of Hamburg named “Harbor City”.
This new quarter is the former harbor area between “Sandtorkai” and “Brooktorkai” in west and the “Elbbrücken” in the east. This area was the center of the harbor of Hamburg up to the invention of the modern containerships. With the distribution of the modern containerships within the international maritime trade in the 1960s this area became to small. The result of this evolution was that the city of Hamburg constructed new and modern container terminals on the south side of the river Elbe.
The former harbor zone became more and more irrelevant and the senate of Hamburg decided in 1997 to build a new quarter within the city – the “Harbor City” quarter.
The city planner planed a concept for the 157 hectare great area. Inside this concept they linked all needs of the people like work and live, culture and recreation, tourism and gastronomy. There should be a new downtown directly near the river.
Up to this area there is the Marco Polo Tower which looks like a mushroom. I showed you this building in my previous blog post of the harbor tour with a picture of it. In this building are the apartments of Wladimir Klitschko the former boxing champion and Helene Fischer a German vocalist.
The city area raised up to more than 40% and there will be more than 40.000 workplaces and more than 15.000 people will live there. The new buildings connecting old and new architectural styles.
There is also the new „Elbphilharmonie”, which costs more than 860 Million Euros, on this area. The Hamburg cruise center “harbor city” and the “Maritime Museum” Hamburg are also within this area.
“Harbor City” also have an own university, the “Hafen City Universität Hamburg.
There are a lot of companies and organizations in “Harbor City” like Greenpeace and so on. In Harbor City are lots restaurants in many several directions.
It is very nice to walk through the quarter and I hope you enjoyed this little trip.
There is a Youtube video of the new quarter of Hamburg:
