Those Forgotten Creatures of Splinterlands: What Stories Do They Hold?
One of the things I find fascinating about the Splinterlands universe is the sheer variety of creatures that inhabit it. Some look familiar, while others seem to have come from places that are difficult to imagine. There are monsters with unusual physical features, mysterious beings with extraordinary appearances and creatures that seem to belong to entirely different worlds.
However, something I rarely think about when looking at these characters is what their existence might have been like before they became part of the battles we see in the game.
Imagine walking through an unfamiliar region of the Splinterlands universe and encountering a creature whose appearance tells you very little about its history. Where did it come from? Does it have a home? Does it live among other creatures of its kind? Is it feared by other inhabitants, or is it simply another part of the natural environment?
These are the kinds of questions that make exploring the fictional world interesting.
Creatures Beyond Their Abilities
In Splinterlands, creatures are often recognised by their abilities and usefulness during battles. Players pay attention to their statistics, attack types, speed and special abilities. It makes sense because these characteristics influence how cards perform.
But imagine temporarily removing all those gameplay considerations.
A creature with an unusual appearance could have an interesting background that has nothing to do with its combat abilities. Perhaps it inhabits an isolated mountain range, survives in underground environments or belongs to a species that is rarely encountered.
I find this perspective interesting because it gives individual creatures a different kind of importance. Instead of seeing them simply as cards with particular functions, we can appreciate them as inhabitants of a much larger fictional universe.
The Mystery of Their Origins
Another interesting subject is where these creatures originated.
Some creatures appear to have characteristics associated with particular environments. Others seem almost impossible to classify. This makes me wonder whether certain species developed naturally within their surroundings or whether some have extraordinary origins connected to ancient events.
Could there be creatures that have existed since the earliest days of the Splinterlands universe? Are there species that have disappeared over time? Could some of the creatures we encounter today be descendants of much older beings?
These questions introduce an interesting historical dimension to the game.
Creatures That Might Have Their Own Societies
Something else worth imagining is whether some creatures live in organised communities.
Not every creature in a fantasy universe necessarily exists independently. Some could belong to tribes, kingdoms or groups with their own traditions and social structures.
Imagine a region inhabited by different species that have learned to coexist. Some might be responsible for protecting their territory, while others could specialise in building, gathering resources or preserving ancient knowledge.
There could even be rival groups with disagreements that existed long before the battles represented in the game.
Of course, these are imaginative possibilities rather than confirmed details of the official Splinterlands lore. Nevertheless, they make the world more interesting to explore.
The Creatures We Overlook
I also think there is something special about the less popular creatures.
In games, attention naturally gravitates towards famous characters, powerful cards and recognisable designs. However, the less celebrated creatures can sometimes be the most interesting subjects for exploration.
A character does not need to be the strongest or most valuable to have an interesting identity.
Sometimes, a strange design or an unusual appearance is enough to inspire questions about its origins and place in the world.
I would particularly enjoy exploring creatures that players rarely discuss, examining their designs and considering what their backgrounds might look like.
A Different Way to Experience Splinterlands
Exploring the creatures of Splinterlands this way changes how I look at the game. It encourages me to pay attention to details that might otherwise go unnoticed.
Instead of asking how useful a creature would be in a battle, I can ask what kind of environment it might inhabit, what its history could be and how it fits into the larger universe.
There are so many different creatures to discover, and each one offers another opportunity to explore the imagination behind Splinterlands.
Perhaps the most interesting stories are not always attached to the most powerful characters. Sometimes, they are hidden behind creatures that players encounter regularly without giving much thought to their existence.
And that is exactly the kind of discovery I want to make as I continue exploring the world beyond the battlefield.
