We've got something a little different today. Sorry for the "too long" long video, but I found this really interesting and it took a few minutes for me to talk about. First we have a couple of things from the news and then a little exploration of what I consider to be bigger news.
Google actually won this case a long time ago, and it ended up getting overturned on appeal. The lawsuit is ridiculous, the result is awful, and I just really get frustrated when decisions are made that have negative real-world consequences. If you want to know the details of why, I would highly recommend that you read the Mike Masnic discussion about it. He seems a bit animated about just how dumb this is.
This was also something that I was not at all pleased to learn, since I'm convinced that Tesla is a company that we want and need to have around. They have created some really amazing technology, open-sourced a number of key design patents and seem to have a mission of mitigating environmental damage and doing it quickly. The main reason I wanted to talk about it, however, was the way that the news broke and the things that seem to be a good reminder and a cautionary tale for small investors. The way that the story unfolded was that on Tuesday the stock went down sharply early in the morning. I saw some people mention it as a freefall, so I went to take a quick look at what was going on. Well, there was news. It was mostly about the production rate of the model 3 and also some doom and gloom predictions from wall street about how they had financed the company. By the end of the day, the shocker showed up in the media. I went back to find a link to the stories which I had read earlier, and they were super difficult to find because everyone was talking about the crash investigation. Hmmm.
Now maybe it's just me and maybe the crash just made a bad situation worse, but I can't help but think that the "smart money" knew early what everyone else found out late. And that's what I mean by a cautionary tale. Information is not distributed evenly and it's important to be aware that you may not be able to react well to market changes if you're not near the top of the food chain for that kind of stuff.
This isn't breaking news, and it's sure to bore some people who already have this ingrained in their thinking. Still, we live in a world which is changing very rapidly and seems to be accelerating at an accelerating pace. I'm astounded and thrilled and enthusiastic about the progress which civilization is making on a number of fronts. We live in interesting times, my friend.
