Wangen im Allgäu is a historic city in southeast Germany
It lies north-east of Lake Constance in Westallgäu. The city was first mentioned in 815 under the name "Wangun" in a monastery document. It's one of those characteristic towns for Germany that when you go there you can be sure that you get exactly what you thought of first visiting these "postcard towns". You won't be disappointed ;)
The old town consists of several streets whcih are richly decorated with fountains, statues and wall paintings. In fact, almost every house here carries a sign which talks about its past. So you could walk very slowly around here taking everything in slowly.
This is really a town where you have to look closely; take this painting for example. If you read the text you can learn that from 1505 to 1955 there was a bakery here and from 1894-1974 a tavern.
Or this house which says that this once used to be the street of the blacksmith guilds with the corresponding wall paintings.
Here is a museum right next to the old town wall which covers the old water mill which is still in use today. Without the cars etc. one is really taken back a millennia here to a very different time. The houses look just like back then!
At the city center there is a beautiful fountain and a church as well as the city hall which is also still in use today.
Here is the square from a different angle showing the rich decorations of the city hall.
Another street which goes to the second larger tower here (with I guess the town wall).
And of course don't forget the cheese! This whole region is very well known for the cheeses they produce here from fresh (raw) milk. This has to be the biggest chunk of cheese I have ever saw (it's hard to see the scale, but there could have probably fit 5 of 6 hands over this slice of cheese!
