I use a big plastic round garbage can with a pretty tight lid.  I recently put it in one with a swinging top so my little daughter could feed her, and it did stink up my kitchen for a couple days, but that smell went away.  It really needs to be back in the large round can back in the basement.  That lid seals in the freshness better.  It holds a 40# bag of dry kibble.

You can use anything plastic with a tight lid.  I've used 4-6 Tupperware cannisters.  Those work fine.
