It's been a while, but I've done a fair bit of travelling about South East Asia. The place I keep returning to is Cambodia. Ever since reading about the temples of Angkor when I was a kid in a National Geographic I've wanted to go. I made this 8 years ago, but I believe it was about some stuff I'd been wrestling with after my first trip which was a couple of years before that. Cambodia is a beautiful, amazing country and all the more so for the way that is recovered from the horrors of the Khmer Rouge(worrying stuff going on there right now though, politically). However, the scars of that hellish time are everywhere, and it was confronting to go from my cushy life (as a dishwasher, at the time in Melbourne) to this place where you'd see so many people who's lives and bodies had been just so utterly destroyed by the the regime. Kinda makes you stare into your own soul a bit. Anyway, this was something that came out of a pretty depressed time of contemplation about cruelty and compassion. In subsequent trips it has been good to see things improving for the little guy, although as I said before I've been reading some worrying things. I look forward to getting back there one day in the not too distant future.
