I am part of the original "Star Wars" fan base. I was 7 years old when I first saw the original. at a drive in movie theater in a medium sized Oklahoma City. It is the one franchise that I have stayed with through the years.
One of the first things to remember is that this is the second part of a trilogy. As with other epic trilogies, it will leave you with more questions than answers, and some unresolved questions, and that will certainly be less than satisfying for some viewers. Questions are asked, and answered in a way that might not sit well with long established fans.
But in writing, if the writer never ticks you off, they are not doing their job. The creators didn't hire ME to create the universe, and it doesn't have to conform to my image. And The Last Jedi certainly is not your father's Star Wars, but rather takes us further into a universe we've come to love. Fans of each generation will sit back and argue which is best, but the movie does not disappoint in its offering of visual effects and high paced action.
I've read all the negatives, and the positive, and my conclusion after viewing The Last Jedi is that it is a terrific addition to the franchise. Yes, I had some questions, yes I had some objections, but those objections were silenced by the enthusiastic chatter of my children as they began creating their own Star Wars Universe and building their own storylines.
Rian Johnson has delivered the magic of the Force to a new generation. And that is truly how you bring balance to the Force!
