It seems everyone is talking about where Lebron James will land this offseason, and while Lebron's decision will shake up the NBA, it's hardly the biggest move that can happen this offseason. If the Spurs move Kawhi this offseason, then that will be bigger than any other move that may happen. Kawhi, while not as good as LeBron on the offensive end of the court, he is a far better defender, and he is also much younger than LeBron.
Kawhi has stated that he wants to go to Los Angeles, preferably the Lakers. The thing is I doubt the Spurs want to strengthen another western conference team, and the Lakers don't have the assets other teams do. Sure the Lakers have some great young talent, but Lavar makes Lonzo almost untradeable, and the other pieces do not add up to Kawhis talent.
The Spurs beat option may be the Celtics, not only do they have a ton of young talent, they also have Kyrie. Why would the Celtics trade a talent like Kyrie for a player that may only stick around a year? Well it's likely Kyrie will be gone in a year anyways, and adding Kawhi to that young, talented team will almost ensure a trip to the finals, but it may be just enough to dethrone the Warriors.
Even if Kawhi does go to the Lakers, he will likely not see the playoffs for a couple of years, unless they pull in another big name, or two. While LeBron, Kawhi, and George make a great big three, will it be enough to beat the Warriors? LeBron and Durant will cancel one another out, and Kawhi and Klay are very similar talents, but George is nowhere near Steph on the offensive end, and if the Lakers keep Randle, he would be on par with Draymond. So all the stars match up well, but the Warriors role players will likely be far superior to whatever the Lakers can manage, so the edge will still go to Golden State.
