Today I will travel you to one of the most impressive Greek islands Serifos in the Cyclades.

Cyclades is a group of islands, southeast of Athens, approximately in the centre of the Aegean Sea, and consists of over 200 islands, the most known ones are Mykonos, Paros, Naxos, Sifnos, Tinos, Santorini.

Serifos can be reached from Piraeus port and the fast ship takes 2.5 hours, while the slow one 4.5 hours. The island has no airport, but can be reached via helicopter, or by sailing!

The island itself is barren, has a lot of hills and it doesn’t have crops; the main income for its 500 permanent residents is tourism; of course they have some goats, cows and chickens, but those are for residential consumption, not for trade. Its residents are mostly old, as the young ones have moved away to work. Thus the island is pure and doesn’t have residential development. Up until one century ago, the main income for the island was mining, nevertheless nowadays mines are abandoned.

The most populated village is the capital Serifos (in most of Greek islands we also call it Chora, it is an alternative name for most of Greek islands’ capitals), which is built c. in the middle of the island, on a big cliff. On the top of the cliff there are the ruins of an old castle, and the village is built around the castle.

The second biggest village is Livadi and it’s actually the port, where the ships and boats arrive. It has a long pear where you can find a lot of taverns and other touristic shops. For a nice meal, I recommend the “Tis Kalis”; it has nice Mediterranean food, although before arriving at the island we were told that you cannot find good food – well if you look for it, you will find it! Here is where we sat to eat:

The best characteristic of this island is its beaches: I think I haven’t found elsewhere so many beautiful beaches, waters of all kinds of colours, lengths and depths. And the best tip is that although the island has no trees, usually most of the beaches do, and you can find a nice shadow to take a nap! The best beach according to my taste is Lia, a beach of the most magnificent blue!

Some nice taverns you can visit are Cyclopas, in Mega Livadi beach (very good and fresh fish) and Petros in Chora (for cooked food).

The people of this island are simple, kind and welcoming! All its beaches are amazing! I hope you will enjoy!
